The origin of the name Ziegler
Ziegler is an ancient German, Swiss, and Austrian occupational surname derived from Middle High German ziegler (meaning "brickmaker," "tile master," or "master builder/mason"). Originating during the early Middle Ages across Bavaria, Swabia, Saxony, and Zurich, families bearing the Ziegler name rose from essential guild masters to patrician standing in municipal councils and civic courts. Expanding across Europe and North America, the House of Ziegler produced celebrated humanists, military commanders, and parliamentarians.
The symbolism of the Ziegler coat of arms
Visually pure and watchful, the Ziegler coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central red stag's or hart's head caboshed (facing forward with majestic antlers). In classical European heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the central red stag head facing forward denotes forest lordship, swift alertness, harmony, vigor, and fierce defense of family domain when cornered. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays two red stag's heads with antlers respecting each other (facing inward), serving as an iconic emblem of dual vigilance, knightly unity, and noble alignment across generations. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in German and Swiss patrician armorial registers and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
