Officially granted by the Crown in August 1821 to Sir William Young, an Ulster-Scots descendant, this coat of arms reflects a lineage intertwined with Irish history over many generations. After accumulating wealth as a director of the East India Company, William Young returned to Ireland, acquiring the historic Bailieborough estate, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the town’s modern infrastructure—much of which remains intact today.

A distinctive element of this design is the presence of three gold trefoils—heraldic symbols representing three-leaf clovers. In heraldry, the trefoil embodies longevity, perpetuity, and faith, adding profound meaning to the family crest.

The legacy of this proud Irish heritage culminated with Sir William’s son, John Young, who was raised on the Bailieborough estate and later became the 2nd Governor General of Canada and the 1st Baron Lisgar.
