The origin of the name Wright

Wright (Le Wricht / Wryhta) is an ancient English occupational surname derived from Old English wyrhta or wryhta (meaning "craftsman," "artisan," "builder," or "master architect"). Establishing premier landed seats across Essex, Yorkshire, Norfolk, and Warwickshire, the House of Wright rose to high standing as baronets, High Sheriffs, Lord Mayors of London, and world-changing pioneers of aviation and architecture. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Robert le Wrichte).

The symbolism of the Wright coat of arms

Visually complex and chivalric, the Wright coat of arms features a shield partitioned vertically per pale in black and deep blue, charged with a central golden chevron bearing three upright red spearheads, set between three silver unicorn's heads erased (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the black and blue fields symbolise deep wisdom, dignity, loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden chevron with red spearheads denotes architectural mastery, knightly sashes, and martial readiness. The three silver unicorn's heads represent chivalric purity, untamed spirit, acute alertness, and invincible courage across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Honor virtute praemium, translating to "Honor is the reward of virtue." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Essex and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
