The origin of the name Woods

Woods is the primary patronymic and plural topographic variant of the ancient surname Wood ("dweller at the woods"). Widespread across England, Scotland, and Ireland (where branches settled prominently in County Sligo, Dublin, and Ulster), families bearing the Woods spelling held respected manorial estates, producing Garter Kings of Arms, high-ranking magistrates, and world-famous inventors.

The symbolism of the Woods coat of arms

Visually rich and nature-inspired, the Woods coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central oak tree proper standing upon a green grassy mount in base. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the green mount and oak tree represent enduring fortitude, land stewardship, vitality, and deep roots in ancestral soil. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a wildman or savage wreathed about the head with oak leaves, holding a club over his shoulder, serving as an iconic emblem of raw primordial strength, forest guardianship, and untamed defense of homeland. Below, the motto scroll displays Tutus in undis, translating to "Safe on the waves." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in British and Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.

Historical figures

Lady Honor Woods (18th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Irish land rolls.
Granville Woods (1856–1910): Celebrated American inventor holding over 50 patents, known as the "Black Edison."
