The origin of the name Wood

Wood is a distinguished surname of English and Scottish origin, deriving from the Old English wudu (meaning "wood" or "forest"). Originally given to someone who lived in or near an ancient woodland or worked as a forest ranger, early branches established seats across Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Dumfriesshire. Historical records document Walter de la Wode in the 1273 Hundred Rolls.

The symbolism of the Wood coat of arms

The coat of arms features an argent (silver) shield charged with a vibrant vert (green) oak tree eradicated (roots fully displayed) bearing golden acorns. In classical heraldry, argent denotes peace and purity, while vert represents hope, vitality, and connection to the earth.

The eradicated oak tree symbolizes deep ancestral roots, unyielding strength, endurance, and regeneration, while the golden acorns represent potential and future prosperity.

Surmounting the shield, a plume of green and silver ostrich feathers rises from a golden coronet. The golden motto scroll bears the Latin Tutus in undis ("Safe on the waves"). Officially cataloged in the Office of Arms and Burke’s General Armory.
