Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Wolfe

Wolfe is the primary historical spelling variant of the ancient warrior surname Wolf (de Wolfe). Widespread across Ireland (where the Wolfes of County Kildare became major landed gentry), England, and North America, the House of Wolfe produced legendary army generals, legal scholars, and pioneering art philanthropists.

The symbolism of the Wolfe coat of arms

Sharing the exact ancestral bearings of the noble Wolf lineage, the Wolfe coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central black wolf rampant. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity and royal favor, while the central black wolf rampant represents fierce courage, stealth, vigilance, and formidable defense of family territory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of black and gold feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Irish and British armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.

Historical figures

General James Wolfe (1727–1759): World-famous British Army general victorious at the historic Battle of the Plains of Abraham (Quebec).
Lady Margaret Wolfe (18th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Kildare estate rolls.
Catharine Lorillard Wolfe (1828–1887): Celebrated American philanthropist and principal benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
