The origin of the name Willis
Willis is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Will" or "son of William" (derived from Germanic Willagarm, composed of will, meaning "desire/will," and helm, meaning "helmet/protection"—thus "resolute protector"). Establishing premier landed seats across Cambridgeshire (Fen Ditton), Berkshire, Warwickshire, and Lancashire, the House of Willis rose to high standing as baronets, High Sheriffs, and pioneering neuroscientists. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Robert Willis).
The symbolism of the Willis coat of arms
Visually pure and celestial, the Willis coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad black chevron, set between three red five-pointed stars or mullets (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the black chevron represents fortress protection, architectural dignity, and knightly sashes of honor. The three red five-pointed stars signify divine illumination, celestial guidance, noble intellect, and martial courage across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden eagle displayed with spread wings, symbolising imperial vision, high intellect, and solar courage. Below, the motto scroll displays Non nobis Domine, translating to "Not unto us, O Lord" (the famous psalm of humility and chivalric service). The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Cambridgeshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
