A Williams Family Crest mug—the perfect gift for family and friends. Beautifully illustrated. Carefully researched. Uniquely personal.

Here's an epic family crest that’s eminently suited for a proper brew—a meaningful gift for milestone birthdays, Father’s Day, a new home, or Christmas morning.

The origin of the Williams surname

The surname Williams is a prolific name worldwide with early Christian, Welsh-Celtic and Anglo-Norman origins. It is derived from the traditional patronymic naming custom, meaning it originally denoted "the son of William". The personal name William stems from Germanic roots meaning "resolute protector"—combining wil (desire or will) and helm (helmet or protection). Due to regional adaptations, dialect shifts, and phonetic variations over centuries, the surname developed numerous forms, including William, Williamson, Wilyams, Guilliam, Guilliams, Quilliams, and the Gaelic MacWilliam.

The widespread adoption of Williams as a fixed hereditary surname traces back to 1535 onwards in Wales. During this period, the integration of the Welsh legal system into English Common Law forced a shift away from traditional, fluid patronymics to conform with English naming conventions. Because the population drew from a relatively small pool of traditional Christian names when fixing their family names, this legal transition ultimately resulted in a limited number of unique surnames across Wales. Concurrently, the name spread into Ireland via Anglo-Norman migration and the subsequent anglicization of Gaelic patronymics.

The symbolism of the Williams coat of arms

The Red Shield: The red background (Gules), traditionally known as the martyr's color, represents military fortitude, bravery, and magnanimity in battle.

The Upright Sword: The silver blade positioned vertically (in pale) with a gold hilt symbolizes authority, government, honor, and the execution of justice.

The Gold Wings: The golden wings flanking the sword signify protection, swiftness, and high achievement.

The Crest and Coronet: Emerging from a golden ducal coronet at the top of the helmet, the arm holding a curved wavy sword reflects a readiness to defend the realm and execute martial duty under recognized authority.

The Motto: The scroll at the base reads "Nil desperandum," a Latin phrase translating to "Never despair" or "Never despairing," which signifies unshakeable resolve and courage in the face of adversity.

Artist’s note

I was a bit surprised by this one...a sword with wings seems almost like a modern 'Game of Thrones' version of a coat of arms, nonetheless it genuinely belongs to an official 1603 registration during the reign of King James I.
