The origin of the name Wiles

Wiles (Wyle / Wyles) is an ancient English descriptive and patronymic surname derived from Middle English wile (meaning "crafty," "shrewd," or "skilled in tactical strategy," originally bestowed as a nickname upon an astute leader or master craftsman). Establishing landed estates across Kent, Essex, Lincolnshire, and Yorkshire, the House of Wiles produced respected High Sheriffs, church preledges, and modern mathematical geniuses. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Reginald Wyles).

The symbolism of the Wiles coat of arms

Visually pure and chivalric, the Wiles coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with two broad red horizontal bars (bars gules), each charged with three golden crosses crosslet fitchy (crosses with pointed bases: three in chief, three in base). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the two red horizontal bars represent fortress rails, architectural defense, and martial sacrifice. The six golden crosses crosslet fitchy signify unyielding Christian faith, sacred crusade oaths, and anchoring family heritage into ancestral soil across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a bundle of golden arrows bound with a red ribbon pointing in opposite directions, serving as an iconic emblem of united strength, strategic readiness, and battle agility. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Kent and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Sir John Wiles (17th Century): Landed gentleman and magistrate recorded in Kent county charters.
Lady Mary Wiles (18th Century): Recorded gentlewoman and benefactor in Essex land rolls.
Sir Andrew Wiles (b. 1953): World-famous English mathematician who famously proved Fermat's Last Theorem.
