The origin of the name Wells
Wells is an ancient English surname of toponymic origin, deriving from the Old English wella (meaning "spring," "stream," or "well"). Originally given to families residing near prominent natural springs or in towns named Wells (such as the historic cathedral city of Wells in Somerset), early branches established manorial seats in Somerset, Lincolnshire, and Kent. Historical records document Philip de Welles in the 1177 Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire.
The symbolism of the Wells coat of arms
The Wells coat of arms features an or (gold) shield charged with a striking sable (black) lion rampant. In classical heraldry, or denotes intellect, elevation of mind, and generosity, while sable signifies constancy and solemn resolve.
The black lion rampant represents fierce courage, majestic leadership, and steadfast defense of domain.
Surmounting the helmet on a black and gold torse, the crest displays a silver stone tower, from which emerges a black demi-lion holding two golden rings (annulets) in its paws.
