The origin of the name Welch
The surname Welch is a medieval ethnonym of Old English origin, derived from the word wælisc or wylisc, which translated literally to "foreigner," "stranger," or "Welshman." It was primarily applied as a descriptive designation for Celtic Britons or individuals originating from Wales who settled in Anglo-Saxon and Norman-controlled territories across England, Scotland, and Ireland. The name stabilized as a hereditary family designation during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries following the Norman Conquest, appearing in early official records such as the 1279 Hundred Rolls of Bedfordshire.
The symbolism of the Welch coat of arms
The Shield Color: The deep blue background traditionally denotes loyalty, truth, and steadfast strength.
The Six Stars: Arranged in a standard three-two-one pattern, these five-pointed stars (referred to heraldically as mullets) are rendered in gold. In traditional heraldry, gold signifies honor and generosity, while stars denote chivalry, noble character, and celestial guidance or distinction.
The Crest: Positioned above the crown, the crest features a single matching gold star (mullet). The crown represents ancestral authority or high civic standing, while the single star mirrors the themes of guidance and honour depicted on the main shield.
Historical records and earliest evidence of creation
This specific coat of arms is explicitly documented in the foundational registries of British heraldry, providing definitive historical proof of its antiquity and recording:
Burke's General Armory Entry: This exact layout is officially recorded and verified under the ancestral name variations of Walshe, Welsh, or Welch of Cathanger, County Somerset, England. The registry formally documents the baseline blazon as "Azure, six mullets or, three, two, and one."
The 1610 Guillim Record: Definite evidence of the design's early prominence is documented in John Guillim’s landmark 1610 masterwork, A Display of Heraldry. This coat of arms was already so well-established by the sixteenth century that Guillim utilized it as the primary textbook example for displaying multiple stars in heraldic art, writing: "He beareth Azure, six Mullets; three, two, and one, Or, by the name of Welsh."
Physical and Chronological Origins: The physical creation of this specific coat of arms traces directly to the Tudor period in the mid-sixteenth century (c. 1540–1560) at the historic Cathanger estate in Somerset.
