The origin of the name Webb

Webb (Le Webb) is an ancient English occupational surname derived from Old English webba (meaning "weaver" or "one who weaves fine textiles"). Establishing premier landed estates across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Kent, and Devon, the House of Webb rose to high standing as baronets, High Sheriffs, and royal architects. Members designed iconic public monuments, served in Parliament, and earned military honors. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Adam le Webbe).

The symbolism of the Webb coat of arms

Visually bold and chivalric, the Webb coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad central golden cross, set between four golden birds or martlets (one in each quarter). In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the broad golden cross represents unyielding Christian faith, generosity, and knightly protection of domain. The four golden martlets signify constant vigilance, peaceful journeys, noble alignment across four quarters of the world, and enduring family devotion. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden eagle displayed with spread wings issuing from a crown, symbolising imperial vision, high intellect, and solar courage. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Wiltshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
