The origin of the name Watts
Watts is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Wat" (Walter). Establishing premier landed seats across Somerset, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, and London, the House of Watts held respected standing as landed gentry, churchmen, and civic leaders. Members served as Lord Mayors of London, world-renowned hymnwriters, and industrial pioneers. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (William Watts).
The symbolism of the Watts coat of arms
Visually structured and noble, the Watts coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally: the upper red top section (chief gules) is charged with a golden annulet or ring set between two golden billets or ingots; the main lower field is white powdered with black ermine spots (ermine). In classical heraldry, the ermine field symbolises high nobility, dignity, and unblemished judicial purity, while the red chief represents martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice. The golden annulet denotes fidelity, continuous unity, and sacred oaths, while the two golden billets signify foundational strength, craftsmanship, and manorial wealth. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red lozenge (diamond) flanked by golden wings displayed, symbolising loftiness, spiritual ascension, and divine illumination. Below, the motto scroll displays Fide sed cui vide, translating to "Trust, but be careful in whom you trust." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Somerset and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
