The origin of the name Washington
Washington (de Washington) is an illustrious ancient English grandee noble surname derived from the manor of Washington in Tyne and Wear (derived from Old English Wassingatun, meaning "settlement of Wassa's people"). Tracing direct descent from William de Hertburn, who acquired the lands of Washington in 1183, the House of Washington established ancestral seats at Washington Old Hall and Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire. Emigrating to Virginia in the 17th century, the family achieved supreme world-famous standing through George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and 1st President of the United States.
The symbolism of the Washington coat of arms
Visually iconic and foundational, the Washington coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with two red horizontal bars (bars gules), set beneath three red five-pointed stars (mullets in chief). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the two red horizontal bars denote fortress rails, architectural defense, and courage on the battlefield. The three red five-pointed stars represent divine illumination, high intellect, celestial guidance, and triple victory across generations. (This famous coat of arms is widely recognized as the direct heraldic inspiration for the flag of the United States and the flag of Washington, D.C.). Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a black raven or eagle displayed with spread wings issuing from a golden crown, symbolising keen vision and noble elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays Exitus acta probat, translating to "The result proves the deed." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Northamptonshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
