The origin of the name Warner
Warner (Wariner / Le Warner) is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English status and occupational surname derived from Old French warrenier (meaning "a warrener," "keeper of royal game preserves," or "manorial forest administrator"), as well as stemming from the Germanic personal name Werner. Establishing premier seats at Walthamstow in Essex, Norfolk, and Warwickshire, the House of Warner rose to high standing as baronets, High Sheriffs, Lieutenants of the Tower of London, and Revolutionary War military heroes. Codified early, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Jacke le Warner).
The symbolism of the Warner coat of arms
Visually vibrant and organic, the Warner coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a broad engrailed red diagonal band (bend gules engrailed), set between six red heraldic roses (three in chief, three in base). In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the engrailed red diagonal bend represents a knightly sash of honor, architectural protection, and martial sacrifice. The six red heraldic roses serve as famous emblems of beauty, hope, joy, grace, and harmonious family unity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red squirrel sitting eating an acorn atop a golden castle crown, symbolising frugality, foresight, quiet industriousness, and forest stewardship. Below, the motto scroll displays Non nobis tantum nati, translating to "We are not born for ourselves alone." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Essex and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
