The origin of the name Wallace

The surname Wallace is of Anglo-Norman and Old English origin, emerging in southwestern Scotland during the twelfth century. It is primarily derived from the historical term le Waleis or the Old English wǣlisċ, which translated literally to "the Welshman" or "foreigner." This designation was used to identify the Celtic Britons who lived within the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde or those who migrated north from the Welsh borderlands. The earliest historically recorded figure of the name was Richard Wallace (recorded as Richard Walensis), who held lands in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire before the year 1160 as a vassal to the High Steward of Scotland. Over generations, these original landholdings in Kyle and Riccarton established the foundation for the historic Clan Wallace.

The symbolism of the Wallace family crest

The Wallace coat of arms appears in the 1542 'Lindsay of the Mount Roll' which was compiled by Sir David Lindsay while he served as the Lord Lyon King of Arms.

The Colors: The red background (gules) traditionally denotes military fortitude, warrior strength, and magnanimity, while the white element (argent) signifies purity, peace, and sincerity.

The Standing Lion: A classic symbol of deathless courage, strength, and majestic leadership, historically chosen to represent a noble or martial lineage.

The Motto: The Latin phrase Pro Libertate translates to "For Liberty." It serves as the official historic motto passed down through the Wallace family line, reflecting the clan's documented role in the historical defense of freedom.

Always worth a mention...

Sir William Wallace (c. 1270–1305): The iconic Scottish patriot and Guardian of Scotland who led the military resistance against King Edward I of England during the Wars of Scottish Independence (and whose life inspired the film Braveheart).
