Walker is a distinguished occupational surname of English and Scottish origin, derived from the Old English word wealcan (meaning "to walk" or "to tread"). In medieval times, a "walker" was a fuller of cloth—a highly skilled artisan who thickened and cleansed raw woven fabric by trampling it in large vats. Following the Norman Conquest, early family branches established prosperous manorial seats across Yorkshire, Northumberland, and the Scottish Lowlands, becoming prominent figures in the thriving British wool trade.
The symbolism of the Walker coat of arms
The coat of arms displays an argent (silver) field charged with a sable (black) chevron set between three black crosses crosslet fitchée (crosses sharpened at the bottom). In heraldry, argent signifies peace, sincerity, and purity, while sable denotes wisdom and constancy.
