The origin of the name Wade
Wade (de Wade) is an ancient English topographic and occupational surname derived from Old English wad or wadan (meaning "a ford," "water crossing," or "one who guides travelers across riverways"), as well as stemming from the legendary Old Norse/English hero Wada. Establishing premier landed estates across Yorkshire, Durham, Suffolk, and Ireland (County Galway and Dublin), the House of Wade produced Field Marshals, High Sheriffs, and parliamentary leaders. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Andrew de la Wade).
The symbolism of the Wade coat of arms
Visually pure and maritime, the Wade coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad golden saltire (X-shaped cross), set between four golden scallop shells or escallops (one in chief, one in base, two in flanks). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden saltire represents cross-road resolution, chivalric defense, and holding domain secure. The four golden scallop shells serve as famous emblems of long journeys, holy pilgrimage, ocean navigation, and steadfast leadership across four quarters of the world. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays In spe resto, translating to "I rest in hope." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
