The origin of the name Vincent
Vincent (St. Vincent) is an ancient Anglo-Norman, English, and French personal name and surname derived from Latin Vincentius (from vincere, meaning "to conquer" or "victorious warrior"). Introduced to Britain following the 1066 Norman Conquest and popularized by early Christian saints, the House of Vincent established premier seats at Stoke D'Abernon in Surrey, Leicestershire, and Normandy. Rising to high nobility as Viscounts St. Vincent and baronets, members served as High Sheriffs, naval admirals, and Parliamentarians. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (William Vincent).
The symbolism of the Vincent coat of arms
Visually pure and celestial, the Vincent coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three argent / silver or white quatrefoils or four-petaled floral blossoms (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three silver quatrefoils represent victory over trial, spiritual grace, joyful renewal, beauty, and unblemished honor across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Vincenti dabitur, translating to "To the conqueror it shall be given." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Surrey and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
