The origin of the name Velasquez

Velasquez (Velásquez / Velázquez) is an ancient Spanish and Galician patronymic noble surname meaning "son of Velasco" (derived from Basque belasko, meaning "crow," "raven," or "vigilant warrior"). Originating during the 8th-century Reconquista in Old Castile and Galicia, the House of Velázquez rose to high standing as Governors of Cuba, Knights of Santiago, and court painters to Spanish royalty.

The symbolism of the Velasquez coat of arms

Visually distinctive and sacred, the Velasquez coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with thirteen argent / silver or white roundels or plates (besants/plates) arranged in rows (3-3-3-3-1). In classical Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the thirteen silver roundels serve as an iconic emblem representing holy pilgrimage, unblemished judicial purity, generosity, circular perfection, and holding vast estate holdings across thirteen domains. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee registers and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Diego Velázquez (1599–1660): World-famous Spanish Golden Age court painter to King Philip IV (Las Meninas).
Doña María Velásquez (16th Century): Spanish noblewoman and benefactor recorded in Valladolid land charters.
Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar (1465–1524): Spanish conquistador and 1st Governor of Cuba.
