The origin of the name Vega
Vega (de la Vega) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from Spanish vega (meaning "meadow," "fertile plain," or "river valley"). Tracing lineage from Don Lope Díaz de Haro, Lord of Biscay in the 12th century, the House of Vega established premier seats at Santander, Old Castile, and Andalusia, rising to supreme aristocracy as Dukes of Sesa, Marquis of Vega, and Grandees of Spain. Dominating Golden Age literature and statecraft, members served as ambassadors, viceroys, and celebrated poets.
The symbolism of the Vega coat of arms
Visually striking and regal, the Vega coat of arms features a red shield charged with a central golden eagle displayed with spread wings and claws. In Iberian heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice on the field of battle, while the central golden eagle displayed represents imperial vision, high intellect, solar courage, swift execution, and sovereign favor across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
