Vaughan is an illustrious ancient Welsh patronymic noble surname derived from the Welsh word fychan or bychan (meaning "little" or "the younger," historically used to distinguish a son from his father of the same personal name). Tracing direct descent from ancient Welsh royal dynasties and princes of Powys, Dyfed, and Monmouthshire, the House of Vaughan established premier seats at Tretower Court in Breconshire and Golden Grove in Carmarthenshire. Rising to high nobility as Earls of Lisburne and Earls of Carbery, members served as High Sheriffs, Lord Lieutenants, and celebrated Renaissance poets. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in 14th-century Welsh administrative records.
