The origin of the name Vasquez

Vasquez (Vásquez / Vázquez) is an ancient Spanish and Galician patronymic noble surname meaning "son of Vasco" (derived from Basque basko, meaning "crow" or "Gascon/Basque warrior"). Originating during the early Reconquista in Galicia, Old Castile, and Asturias, the House of Vázquez held premier standing as Lords of Castrofuerte and Counts of Fernandina. Members served as Knights of Santiago, Viceroys of New Spain, and conquistadors.

The symbolism of the Vasquez coat of arms

Visually pure and fortress-inspired, the Vasquez coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central argent / silver or white triple-towered castle or fortress standing upon a silver mount in base. In Iberian heraldry, the green field symbolises hope, vitality, and deep roots in ancestral soil, while the silver triple-towered castle represents fortress defense, architectural strength, manorial hospitality, and civic protection. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of green and gold/silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian and Galician nobility rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Francisco Vázquez de Coronado (1510–1554): World-famous Spanish conquistador and explorer of the American Southwest.
Doña María Vázquez (16th Century): Recorded noblewoman and benefactor in Galicia land rolls.
Don Martín Vázquez de Arce (1461–1486): Famed Castilian knight known as El Doncel de Sigüenza.
