The origin of the name Vargas

Vargas (de Vargas) is an ancient Spanish and Portuguese grandee noble surname derived from the town and river valley of Vargas in Cantabria, Northern Spain. Tracing lineage from Don Ivan de Vargas, who fought alongside King Alfonso VI in the 11th century, the House of Vargas rose to supreme aristocracy as Marquis of San Lorenzo and Counts of Mora. Dominating Iberian history, members served as Viceroys of New Mexico, royal treasurers, and celebrated painters.

The symbolism of the Vargas coat of arms

Visually pure and maritime, the Vargas coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three argent / silver or white wavy horizontal bands (barry wavy azure and argent of six). In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three silver wavy horizontal bands denote river and ocean lordship, fluid adaptability, navigational command, and unblemished judicial purity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
