Whether it’s a gift to celebrate a milestone birthday, a wedding or a housewarming—this piece is an instant heirloom.

The origin of the name Valdes

Valdes (Valdés / de Valdés) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the manor and valley of Valdés in Corvera de Asturias, Northern Spain (derived from Spanish val, meaning "valley," and the personal name Diego / Valdés). Originating during the 8th century, the House of Valdés rose to supreme aristocracy as Counts of Canalejas and Marquis of Valdés. Members served as Grand Inquisitors, Viceroys of New Spain, royal navigators, and conquistadors.

The symbolism of the Valdes coat of arms

Visually pure and aristocratic, the Valdes coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with three deep blue diagonal bands (bends azure). In Iberian heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the three deep blue diagonal bands represent knightly sashes of honor, loyalty, truth, faith, and river or valley lordship across ancestral Asturian domains. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Asturian grandee rolls and catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Don Fernando de Valdés y Llano (1483–1568): Archbishop of Seville, Grand Inquisitor of Spain, and President of the Council of Castile.
Doña María de Valdés (16th Century): Spanish noblewoman recorded in Asturian estate charters.
Juan de Valdés (1500–1541): Famed Spanish Golden Age humanist, writer, and religious scholar.
