The origin of the name Underwood
Underwood (de Underwood) is an ancient English topographic surname derived from Old English under and wudu (referring to an ancestor residing near the edge or under the shade of a manorial forest or woodland). First established across Norfolk, Hertfordshire, and Herefordshire, the House of Underwood produced High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and military commanders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (William de Underwode).
The symbolism of the Underwood coat of arms
Visually complex and structured, the Underwood coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad central argent / silver or white horizontal band (fess) bearing a walking deep blue lion (lion passant) set between black ermine spots, flanked outside the band by three golden annulets or rings (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the silver fess represents a knightly sash of honor and judicial purity. The blue lion passant denotes supreme bravery, dignity, and watchful protection, while the three golden annulets signify fidelity, continuous family unity, and noble standing across generations. Positioned above the shield, a steel knight's helmet in profile with visor closed rests atop the field, topped with a plume of red and gold feathers. Below, the motto scroll displays Omnes arbusta juvant, translating to "All woods give delight." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Herefordshire and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
