The origin of the name Turner
Turner (Le Turner) is an illustrious ancient Anglo-Norman and English occupational surname derived from Old French tournour (a master artisan who shaped wood, metal, or bone on a lathe). Establishing influential landed estates across Yorkshire, Norfolk, Warwickshire, and Sussex, the House of Turner rose to high aristocracy as Earls of Winterton and baronets. Members served as High Sheriffs, Lord Mayors of London, Speakers of the House of Commons, and world-renowned landscape painters. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (William le Turnur).
The symbolism of the Turner coat of arms
Visually rich and structured, the Turner coat of arms features a black shield charged with an ermine-patterned argent / silver or white chevron set between three golden millrinds or iron mill-supports (fer-de-moline: two in chief, one in base), beneath an argent / silver or white top section (chief) bearing a red lion walking (lion passant) holding a golden millrind in its right paw. In classical heraldry, the black field symbolises deep wisdom, dignity, and constancy under trial, while the ermine chevron represents high nobility, architectural protection, and knightly sashes of honor. The three golden millrinds denote structural strength, craftsmanship, and manorial stability, while the silver chief with the red walking lion signifies supreme courage, heroic leadership, and royal favor. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of black and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays Esse quam videri, translating to "To be, rather than to seem." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Norfolk and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
