The origin of the name Tuohy
Tuohy is the most widespread modern spelling of the ancient Gaelic surname Ó Tuathaigh ("ruler of the territory"). Tracing direct lineage from ancient chieftains in County Clare, Galway, and Mayo, the House of Tuohy played a prominent role in Irish history, producing celebrated Gaelic artists, political leaders, and international scholars.
The symbolism of the Tuohy coat of arms
Visually striking and iconic, the Tuohy coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central golden wolf rampant, set below two green shamrocks or trefoils in chief, enclosed within a red embattled border. In Irish heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and judicial purity, while the rampant golden wolf represents fierce bravery, loyalty, and vigilance over ancestral territory. The green shamrocks serve as iconic emblems of Irish heritage, perpetual faith, and hope, while the red embattled bordure signifies fortress protection and military fortitude. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver crane or swan holding a green shamrock in its beak, symbolising acute watchfulness and peace. Below, the motto scroll displays Ó Tuathaigh. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
