Tuohey is an ancient Gaelic Irish clan surname stemming directly from Ó Tuathaigh ("ruler of the people / territory"). Prominent in County Clare, Offaly, and Tipperary, the House of Tuohey produced respected scholars, church preledges, and battle commanders who defended Gaelic land rights through the Tudor and Cromwellian eras.

The symbolism of the Tuohey coat of arms

Visually rich and structured, the Tuohey coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally with a red top chief bearing a walking golden lion, over a deep blue lower field with a golden wedge (pile) charged with a red Latin cross, set between a golden ship's wheel and a golden garb of wheat. In classical heraldry, the lion symbolises supreme bravery and warrior fortitude, while the red cross denotes unyielding faith. The golden ship's wheel represents leadership through challenging waters, and the golden wheat sheaf signifies bountiful harvest and sustenance. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an arm issuing erect holding a silver steel sword, symbolising armed protection. Below, the motto scroll displays the Gaelic clan name Ó Tuathaigh.
