The origin of the name Tucker
Tucker (Le Tucker) is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English occupational surname derived from Old English tucian or Old French touquer (meaning "a fuller" or "cloth finisher," an essential medieval artisan who cleansed, thickened, and prepared raw woven wool). Establishing premier landed seats across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, and Kent, the House of Tucker produced High Sheriffs, naval commanders, and colonial governors of Bermuda. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Dorset (Roger le Tukere).
The symbolism of the Tucker coat of arms
Visually pure and maritime, the Tucker coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white chevron bearing three red hearts, set between three silver sea-horses (hippocampi) swimming upon silver and blue ocean waves (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the silver chevron represents fortress protection, architectural integrity, and sincerity. The three red hearts signify courageous devotion, charity, warmth, and steadfast love, while the three silver sea-horses denote naval command, maritime skill, swiftness, and oceanic protection of trade routes. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and silver feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Devon and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
