The origin of the name Tremblay
Tremblay (du Tremblay) is an ancient French and Norman topographic surname derived from Old French tremblay (meaning "aspen grove" or "place where aspen trees grow," from Latin tremuletum). Originating in Normandy and Perche (Randonnai), the House of Tremblay held respected landed estates and manorial lordships in medieval France. In 1647, Pierre Tremblay emigrated from Perche to New France (Quebec), becoming the single founding patriarch of virtually all Tremblays in North America. Today, Tremblay stands as one of the most populous, influential, and celebrated pioneer lineages in French-Canadian history.
The symbolism of the Tremblay coat of arms
Visually striking and chivalric, the Tremblay coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a bare arm issuing from the sinister side holding an upright argent / silver steel sword, set between three golden lilies or fleur-de-lis-style flowers (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, unyielding faith, and noble devotion, while the arm holding an erect silver sword denotes military valor, armed readiness, and fierce defense of pioneer domain. The three golden lilies represent French heritage, spiritual grace, purity, and hopeful prosperity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in French noble armorials and catalogued in J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
