The origin of the name Touhy
Touhy (Ó Tuathaigh) in its classic Gaelic sept representation originates from the ancient territories of County Clare and Galway. Ruling as hereditary leaders and landholders, the clan maintained deep roots in Gaelic civilization, resisting feudal encroachments and preserving native legal customs across Munster and Connacht.
The symbolism of the Touhy coat of arms
Visually pure and protective, this classic Touhy coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central golden wolf rampant in full battle stance, set beneath two green trefoils or shamrocks in chief. The inner field is enclosed within a red embattled border (bordure gules embattled). In Gaelic heraldry, the silver field symbolises unblemished sincerity and peace, while the rampant golden wolf represents fierce courage, stealth, untamed spirit, and unyielding defense of clan lands. The two green shamrocks signify native Irish heritage and hopeful vitality, while the red embattled bordure represents stone fortress battlements and architectural defense. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver crane or swan holding a green trefoil in its beak beside a red eight-pointed star, symbolising vigilance and celestial guidance. Below, the motto scroll displays Ó Tuathaigh. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
