The origin of the name Touhy

Touhy is a primary historical spelling variant of the ancient Gaelic surname Ó Tuathaigh ("ruler of the territory"). Established across County Galway, Offaly, and Tipperary, families bearing the Touhy spelling held respected agricultural lands and civic appointments along the River Shannon.

The symbolism of the Touhy coat of arms

Sharing the exact augmented armorial bearings of the noble Touhey lineage, the Touhy coat of arms features a shield with a upper red chief charged with a walking golden lion, set above a deep blue field with a golden pile bearing a red Latin cross, flanked by a golden ship's wheel and a golden wheat sheaf. In Irish heraldry, the lion represents ancestral chieftain authority, the red cross denotes spiritual devotion, the ship's wheel signifies navigational mastery, and the wheat sheaf represents agricultural abundance and generous hospitality. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a bare arm issuing erect holding a silver steel sword, symbolising constant readiness to defend domain. Below, the motto scroll displays Ó Tuathaigh. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
