The origin of the name Terry
Terry is an ancient Anglo-Norman and Gaelic Irish patronymic surname derived from the Old French personal name Thierry (stemming from Germanic Theodoric, composed of theod, meaning "people," and ric, meaning "ruler"—thus "ruler of the people"). Introduced to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest and to Ireland during the 1169 Cambro-Norman invasion, the family became one of the principal patrician dynasties of County Cork. Ruling as Mayors of Cork, High Sheriffs, and international merchants, the House of Terry maintained significant influence across Munster, England, and France. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Richard Terry).
The symbolism of the Terry coat of arms
Visually structured and chivalric, the Terry coat of arms features a shield partitioned horizontally: the upper golden top section (chief or) is charged with a central red lion rampant; the lower main field is deep blue, divided horizontally by a broad argent / silver or white band (fess), charged with three golden crosses crosslet (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the gold and blue fields symbolise generosity, elevation of mind, loyalty, and faith. The red lion rampant represents supreme courage, warrior fortitude, and noble leadership, while the silver fess denotes a knightly sash of honor and unblemished judicial purity. The three golden crosses crosslet signify unyielding Christian devotion and sacred oaths across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays Ex cruce leo, translating to "From the cross a lion." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
