The origin of the name Sutton

Sutton (de Sutton) is an ancient Anglo-Norman and English grandee noble surname derived from Old English suth (meaning "south") and tun (meaning "settlement," "village," or "manorial estate"). Originating during the Saxon and Norman eras across Nottinghamshire (Sutton-on-Trent), Cheshire, and Yorkshire, the House of Sutton rose to supreme political and military standing as Barons Dudley (Sutton of Dudley) and Viscounts Canterbury. Ruling vast lordships and castle fortresses, members served as Knights of the Garter, Lord Lieutenants of Ireland, Archbishops of Canterbury, and Speakers of the House of Commons. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Sir Raynold de Sutton).

The symbolism of the Sutton coat of arms

Visually pure and regal, the Sutton coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central green lion rampant wearing a golden royal crown. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the central green lion rampant crowned in gold serves as a famous emblem of supreme bravery, noble dignity, warrior fortitude, and royal appointment. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of green and gold feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation, light, and royal favor. Below, the motto scroll displays Pour y parvenir, translating from French to "In order to achieve it." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Nottinghamshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.

Historical figures

Lady Mary Sutton (17th Century): English gentlewoman and benefactor recorded in Nottinghamshire estate charters.
