The origin of the name Stone

Stone (de la Stone) is an ancient English topographic surname derived from Old English stan (referring to an ancestor residing near a prominent boundary stone, ancient megalith, or manorial stone edifice). Establishing premier landed seats across Kent, Essex, Cornwall, and Devon, the House of Stone produced High Sheriffs, Signers of the American Declaration of Independence, and pioneer suffragists. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Warin de la Stane).

The symbolism of the Stone coat of arms

Visually striking and nature-inspired, the Stone coat of arms features a shield partitioned vertically per pale in red (gules) and deep blue, charged with a central golden eagle displayed with spread wings and claws, set between three golden five-petaled cinquefoils or roses (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the red and blue fields symbolise martial courage, fortitude, sacrifice, loyalty, and faith. The central golden eagle displayed represents high intellect, solar courage, imperial vision, and swift execution, while the three golden cinquefoils denote grace, beauty, hope, and unyielding family unity across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a walking argent / silver or white wolf or hound (passant), symbolising fierce courage, stealth, and acute watchfulness. Below, the motto scroll displays Vive et vivas, translating to "Live and let live." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Kent and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
