The origin of the name Stewart
Stewart (Clan Stewart / Stiùbhart) is one of the most famous royal Gaelic clan surnames in world history, derived from Old English stiward (meaning "steward," "governor," or "keeper of the royal hall"). Tracing direct lineage from Walter fitz Alan, appointed 1st High Steward of Scotland in the 12th century, the family rose to become the Royal House of Stewart. Ruling as Kings of Scots and Monarchs of Great Britain, the clan commanded vast Highland and Lowland baronies from royal seats at Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, and Mount Stuart.
The symbolism of the Stewart coat of arms
Visually iconic and royal, the Stewart coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central horizontal checkered band (fess chequy) in deep blue and argent / silver or white. In classical Scottish heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor. The checkered fess in blue and silver serves as the historic emblem of the High Stewards of Scotland, representing financial administration, strategic balance, loyalty, truth, and unblemished judicial purity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden "pelican in her piety" vulning herself (feeding her chicks in a nest with drops of red blood from her breast), serving as a supreme emblem of self-sacrificing royal care, devotion, and unyielding protection of subjects. Below, the motto scroll displays Virescit vulnere virtus, translating to "Virtue flourishes from a wound." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for the Royal House of Stewart.
