The origin of the name Stephens

Stephens is an ancient English and Welsh patronymic surname meaning "son of Stephen" (derived from Greek Stephanos, meaning "crown" or "wreath of victory," brought to Britain following the 1066 Norman Conquest). Establishing premier landed estates across Cornwall (Tregenna Castle), Gloucestershire, Devon, and Radnorshire, the House of Stephens produced High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and colonial statesmen. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Gilbert Stephens).

The symbolism of the Stephens coat of arms

Visually balanced and celestial, the Stephens coat of arms features a shield partitioned per chevron in deep blue and argent / silver or white: the upper deep blue section is charged with two golden eagles displayed combatant (facing each other in battle stance); the lower chevron section is solid silver. In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the silver lower section represents unblemished judicial purity, peace, and sincerity. The line of partition represents architectural protection, while the two golden eagles facing each other signify high intellect, solar vision, dual guardian courage, and noble family alignment across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a blue and silver falcon or bird resting, symbolising keen vigilance and peaceful ascension. Below, the motto scroll displays Virtutis amore, translating to "Through love of virtue." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Cornwall and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry.
