The origin of the name Steele

Steele is the primary historical spelling variant of the ancient surname Steel ("resolute warrior / smith"). Widespread across Scotland, Northern England, and Ireland (where branches settled in County Dublin and Tipperary), the House of Steele produced world-famous essayists, co-founders of modern journalism, and high-ranking military commanders.

The symbolism of the Steele coat of arms

Sharing the exact ancestral armorial bearings of the noble Steel lineage, the Steele coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad black diagonal band powdered with silver ermine spots, set between two red lion's heads erased facing left, beneath a deep blue chief bearing three golden billets or ingots. In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity and peace, while the black ermine bend represents high nobility and constancy under trial. The two red lion heads signify fierce bravery and watchfulness, while the deep blue chief with three golden billets denotes loyalty, foundational strength, and manorial wealth. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red lion's head erased set before two crossed silver steel swords, symbolising armed readiness and warrior fortitude. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in heraldic rolls and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
