The origin of the name Stanley
Stanley is an illustrious ancient Anglo-Norman grandee noble surname derived from Staneley in Staffordshire (derived from Old English stan, meaning "stone," and leah, meaning "clearing" or "meadow"). Tracing direct descent from Adam de Aldithley in the 12th century, the House of Stanley rose to supreme political power as Earls of Derby, Sovereign Kings of Mann, and Hereditary High Constables of England. Commanding vast baronies from Knowsley Hall in Lancashire, the family played a decisive role at the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485) and produced Prime Ministers of Great Britain.
The symbolism of the Stanley coat of arms
Visually pure and aristocratic, the Stanley coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad deep blue diagonal band (bend azure) bearing three golden stag's or hart's heads caboshed (facing forward). In classical heraldry, the silver field symbolises sincerity, peace, and unblemished judicial purity, while the deep blue diagonal bend represents a knightly sash of honor, loyalty, truth, and faith. The three golden stag heads facing forward denote forest lordship, swift alertness, harmony, peace, and fierce defense when provoked. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a plume of blue and silver feathers issuing from a golden crown, symbolising noble elevation and royal favor. Below, the motto scroll displays Sans changer, translating from French to "Without changing" (signifying unyielding steadfastness). The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Lancashire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
