The origin of the name Solis
Solis (de Solís) is an ancient Spanish grandee noble surname derived from the manor and valley of Solís in Corvera de Asturias, Northern Spain (derived from Spanish sol, meaning "sun"—thus "sunny estate"). Originating during the 8th century, the House of Solís rose to supreme aristocracy as Lords of Solís, Marquis of Ojeda, and Counts of Saldueña. Members served as Knights of Santiago, royal chroniclers of the Indies, and high-ranking military commanders across Spain and the Americas.
The symbolism of the Solis coat of arms
Visually radiant and iconic, the Solis coat of arms features a radiant golden shield charged with a central red sun in splendour featuring a human face and alternating straight and wavy flaming rays. In Iberian heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity, elevation of mind, and royal favor, while the central red sun in splendour (Sol) serves as a famous canting emblem representing supreme warmth, divine illumination, royal presence, solar vitality, and life-giving leadership across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of red and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light.
