About the Smith surname and coat of arms
Smith – one of the most prevalent surnames throughout the world – derives from the Old English word ‘smitan’, meaning ‘to strike or hammer’. It fits into the catogery of ‘occupational surnames’ and became widespread due to the importance of metal-working historically. Smith was commonly used to denote a worker in metal, especially iron, such as a blacksmith or farrier.
The earliest recorded version of the surname in England is Eceard Smid, dated 975 AD in the Register for County Durham, during the reign of King Edward. The surname Smith was recorded in Suffolk, England as early as 1204. In Scotland the earliest record of the name is at Aberdeen in 1398. Meanwhile on the european mainland, one Henricus Schmitt of Rostock was recorded in Germany 1287. Over time, variations like Smythe and Smidth have emerged.
The surname Smith is also found in Irish and Scottish contexts, as an anglicised version of the older (pre-Norman period) Gaelic surname Mac Gobhann or MacGowan, meaning ‘son of the smith’ (see other Smith crests on this site).
As with many occupational surnames in heraldry, a variety of Smith family coats of arms were created at various times in various countries.
This version of the Smith family crest originates from France but is linked to families across Europe and the UK. The the diagonal cross or saltire represents suffering and endurance. The black symbols on the white background are called ermine. These represent the fur of the stoat in its white winter coat, which has for centuries been associated with royalty and nobility. Its use in heraldry symbolizes valor, justice, and dignity.
