The origin of the name Smith (Irish)
In Ireland, the surname Smith is most commonly an anglicisation of the native Gaelic name Mac an Ghabhann or O’Ghabhann, translating directly to "son of the smith." Deeply rooted in County Cavan, Leitrim, and the ancient kingdom of Breifne, the O'Gowan clans were traditional armourers to the ruling chieftains. Under 16th and 17th-century administrative pressures, many branches phonetically translated their surname to Smith.
The symbolism of the Smith (Irish) coat of arms
The shield features two bare arms issuing from the flanks holding aloft a flaming brazier, supported by a third hand below grasping an upright sword. The flame denotes enlightenment, truth, and forge-fire resilience, while the sword signifies justice and defence. The Latin motto scroll reads Tenebras expellit et hostes, meaning "He drives away darkness and enemies." These arms are officially preserved in the historic archives of the Office of the Chief Herald of Ireland (formerly the Ulster Office of Arms).
