This splendid coat of arms is eminently suited for a proper brew—a meaningful gift for milestone birthdays, Father’s Day, a new home, or Christmas morning.

Symbolism of the Smith coat of arms

This specific Smith coat of arms, featuring a heron with a fish on the crest, was officially granted and recorded in the Tudor registers of the College of Arms in London in 1509 to Richard Smith, a prominent Alderman and the Sheriff of London during the accession of King Henry VIII.

Every element of this historic 1509 coat of arms was intentionally chosen to reflect the character, virtues, and faith of the bearer, culminating in a powerful visual legacy.

The Heron with a Fish: In classical heraldry, the heron is a symbol of vigilance, patience, and quiet wisdom due to its calm, calculated hunting nature. Holding a silver fish in its beak signifies prudence, prosperity, and piety—the reward of hard work and focused determination. The unique gold droplets (guttée d'or) on its neck represent drops of liquid gold, symbolizing generosity, wealth, and divine blessings.

The Fleur-de-lis: Positioned on the central chevron, the three red fleurs-de-lis are traditional symbols of purity, light, and dedication to the Virgin Mary. In Tudor England, they were also frequently granted to denote royal favor, noble alliances, or a reputation for flawless honor.

The Crosses Pattée Fitchée: While often generalized as simple crosslets, the 1509 record explicitly details three crosses pattée fitchée (crosses with spreading arms and a pointed base). The pointed foot (fitchée) historically represents a pilgrim's or crusader's staff, symbolizing a family "deeply rooted in the Christian faith" and unwavering in their beliefs.

The Motto (Benigno Numine): Translated from Latin, this ancient phrase means "By divine providence" or "Under a favorable providence." It serves as a declaration of humility and gratitude, attributing the family’s success and protection to a higher power.

Artist's note: I really enjoyed recreating the heron with a fish on this crest — such a beautifully meaningful piece of symbolism and it one of my favourite pieces that I have drawn for any crest.

Origins of the Smith Name

Derived from the Old English word smitan (meaning "to smite" or "to strike"), the name originally designated a master craftsman or metalworker—an indispensable and highly respected role in medieval society. Over the centuries, the surname evolved from a functional trade title into the king of surnames in the English speaking world.

Two significant dates:

975 AD: The earliest recorded version of the surname in British history appears as Eceard Smid in the Register for County Durham during the Anglo-Saxon reign of King Edward the Martyr.

1204 AD: Following the Norman Conquest, the surname solidified its modern spelling, recorded officially in Suffolk, England.

Over the generations, linguistic and regional variations—such as the Saxon Smid, Smieth, and Smeeth; the Anglo-Norman Ferrier, Farrar, and Faber; and the Old English Smithman, Smither, and aristocratic English Smythe—veered towards the modern spelling of Smith. By the time Richard Smith secured this definitive heron-bearing crest in 1509, the Smith name had transitioned from a celebrated occupational title into a moniker of unmatched cultural sovereignty.
