About the Singleton surname and coat of arms

Before surnames became formalised it was common for people to be called after the settlement they came from, or by a name that described their occupation. The surname Singleton derives from an Anglo-Saxon place name. 'Sengelton' – near Midhurst in Sussex – appears in the 1185 Pipe Rolls of Sussex, while 'Syngelton' is recorded in Lancashire in 1190. The name originates from the Old English senge meaning a burnt clearing in a forest, and tūn meaning a settlement (settlement in the clearing). In Ireland, the name appears on records during the 1600's in counties Louth and Monaghan.

The earliest recorded Singleton coat of arms was registered to Sir John Singleton of Lancashire in the early 1300's. It simply featured the three white stripes pointing upwards – known as chevronels gules – to signify a noble family with a history of military service. The birds known as martels (swift/swallow) were added in subsequent centuries. They signify speed, grace and a desire to rise or strive higher. The eagle on the crest is a symbol of strength and courage while the sword it holds denotes military honor, justice, and protection.
