The origin of the name Sims
Sims (Syms) is an ancient English and Welsh patronymic surname meaning "son of Sim" or "son of Simeon." Establishing prominent landed estates across Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Cornwall, the House of Sims held respected manorial seats and church baronies. Members served as High Sheriffs, parliamentary officers, and medical pioneers. Codified early in feudal administrative records, the name appears in 14th-century subsidy rolls.
The symbolism of the Sims coat of arms
Visually striking and martial, the Sims coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white chevron bearing three black ravens or crows, set between two golden six-pointed stars (mullets) in chief and an upright golden battle-axe in base. In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the silver chevron represents fortress protection and unblemished honor. The three black ravens denote acute watchfulness, sharp intellect, and longevity, while the two golden stars signify celestial guidance. The golden battle-axe in base represents warrior execution, military justice, and formidable defense of family domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a bare hand issuing holding a blue quill or feather erect, symbolising scholarship, secretarial authority, and literary honor. Below, the motto scroll displays Fortuna et labore, translating to "By fortune and labor." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in British heraldic registers and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
