Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Shortt

Shortt (Short / Mac Shortt) is an ancient English, Scottish, and Gaelic Irish surname derived from Middle English schort (originally bestowed as a nickname for a quick, brisk, or shorter warrior) or serving as an Anglicised form of Gaelic Mac An Ghearr ("son of the short warrior"). Establishing influential seats in Dumfriesshire (Scotland) and County Tipperary and Armagh (Ireland), the family produced respected landholders, military officers, and cabinet ministers.

The symbolism of the Shortt coat of arms

Visually striking and watchful, the Shortt coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central golden griffin segreant (rearing with spread wings), set between three golden six-pointed stars (mullets: two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden griffin segreant represents acute vigilance, high intellect, fierce agility, and guardian power. The three golden six-pointed stars denote divine illumination, celestial guidance, and noble alignment across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden griffin's head with spread blue wings holding a golden star in its beak, reinforcing keen vision and constant readiness. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in Scottish and Irish armorial rolls and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
