The origin of the name Shelton

Shelton (de Shelton) is an ancient English grandee noble surname derived from place names such as Shelton in Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, and Bedfordshire (derived from Old English scelf, meaning "shelf/slope," and tun, meaning "settlement" or "manor"). Originating during the Saxon and Norman eras, the House of Shelton held premier standing at Shelton Hall in Norfolk. Playing a major role in Tudor royal history, members served as High Sheriffs, Parliamentarians, and governesses to the royal court.

The symbolism of the Shelton coat of arms

Visually bold and chivalric, the Shelton coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad central golden cross. In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and unyielding faith, while the broad golden cross represents unyielding Christian devotion, chivalric honor, generosity, and steadfast defense of domain. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red lion walking (lion passant) standing upon a red and silver velvet cap of maintenance (chapeau), serving as an iconic emblem of supreme bravery, royal favor, and vigilant protection of family territory. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Norfolk and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
