The origin of the name Shaw

Shaw is an ancient Gaelic and Scottish clan surname (Clan Shaw / Clann Seathach) as well as an English topographic surname derived from Old English sceaga (meaning "copse," "thicket," or "small wood"). As a major branch of Clan Chattan in the Scottish Highlands, the Chiefs of Clan Shaw held ancestral strongholds at Rothiemurchus and Tordarroch in Inverness-shire. Defending Highland territories through centuries of clan history, the family produced celebrated battle commanders, High Sheriffs, and world-renowned literary giants.

The symbolism of the Shaw coat of arms

Visually pure and hospitality-inspired, the Shaw coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden covered cups or chalices (two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three golden covered cups serve as a famous emblem of royal cupbearer service, manorial hospitality, holding sacred trusts, and generosity held in high honor across generations. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a striking plume of blue and gold feathers, symbolising noble elevation and light. Below, the motto scroll displays Fide et Fortitudine, translating to "By faith and fortitude." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Shaw of Tordarroch and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
