The origin of the name Sharp
Sharp (Sharpe / Scharp) is an ancient English and Scottish descriptive surname derived from Old English scearp (meaning "sharp," "keen-witted," "quick-minded warrior," or "expert archer"). Establishing premier landed seats across Yorkshire, Durham, Dumfriesshire, and Perthshire, the House of Sharp produced Archbishops of York, baronets, High Sheriffs, and celebrated abolitionist leaders. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls (Alexander Scharp).
The symbolism of the Sharp coat of arms
Visually pure and watchful, the Sharp coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central argent / silver or white pheon or broad arrowhead pointed downward with a golden socket, enclosed within an argent / silver or white border (bordure) charged with eight red roundels or torteaux. In classical heraldry, the deep blue field symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the central silver pheon signifies archer's precision, martial readiness, and sharp intellect. The silver bordure with eight red roundels represents fortress protection, sacrifice, and spherical perfection in governance. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a blue eagle's or falcon's head erased holding a silver pheon in its beak, symbolising keen vision and constant readiness. Below, the motto scroll displays Dum spiro spero, translating to "While I breathe, I hope." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.
